Grootvlei raid nabs drugs, phones, and shivs

A surprise raid at a Free State prison uncovered a stash of illegal contraband. Correctional Services officials, alongside police, conducted an unannounced search at the Grootvlei Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein. The operation resulted in the seizure of drugs, including crystal meth and dagga, along with cellphones, money, and improvised weapons.

National Commissioner Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale led the joint effort, part of a broader national initiative called Operation Vala targeting smuggling networks. He warned that any inmate or official involved with contraband would face strict consequences, noting several staff members have already been dismissed this year for smuggling phones. The seized items fuel violence and criminal activity within the facility, undermining security and rehabilitation efforts.

Similar unannounced searches have recently been executed at other correctional facilities across the country. The ongoing operation highlights the department's focus on disrupting the flow of illegal goods into prisons. Investigations will continue to determine how the materials entered the Grootvlei centre, with potential disciplinary action for those involved.
