Romain Grosjean returns to Formula 1 machinery Friday when he drives the Haas VF-23 at Mugello Circuit. The French driver last competed during the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix before suffering severe burns in a dramatic accident. Haas arranged the Testing of Previous Car session for their former driver who raced 179 Grands Prix. Team Principal Ayao Komatsu worked with Grosjean throughout his entire F1 career as both race engineer and team leader.
Grosjean switched to IndyCar racing after departing Formula 1 and earned six podium finishes across four seasons. The test represents his first F1 experience since the life-threatening crash nearly five years ago. He plans to wear the special helmet his children designed for what should have been his final Abu Dhabi race. Former IndyCar competitor James Hinchcliffe will also drive the VF-23 for a television broadcast feature.
