Gunshots in Mathare as Police Chase Suspects

Three Shot in Phone Theft Chase Through Nairobi Slum.

A seven-year-old boy and two others suffered gunshot wounds during a clash between police and thieves in Mathare, Nairobi, on Wednesday evening.

The shooting left the victims with stomach and leg injuries. Police say the trouble started when thieves took a phone from someone on a bus near Juja Road. The thieves ran into the slum area. People who saw this told police officers who stood on duty nearby.

Police went after the thieves through Nigeria Gate. The chase moved toward an area called Kampala Ndogo. The officers heard shots ring out from where the thieves had gone. They stepped back. Later, MSF Hospital told them three hurt people came in with gunshot wounds.

The police say they did not shoot at anyone. They looked through the area but found no thieves. They want to know what happened.

In another case that same day, police caught a man who hurt someone with a knife. The victim was walking to work when a thief tried to take his things. The man fought back. The thief stuck a knife in the man's stomach and took his phone. Help came fast. The hurt man went to a hospital. Police found the thief hiding in a house.

These attacks happen often in poor areas. Police tell people not to fight back when thieves come. Last month, a man died from knife wounds because he fought thieves. His small boy, four years old, saw everything from his father's back. The father had planned to leave his boy at a day place. Mike Sonko, who once led Nairobi, said he would take care of the boy. Police are still looking for the man who did this bad thing.

The police continue to work to make these areas safer. They want to stop thieves from hurting more people on these streets.
