Azruddin Mohamed, leader of the Guyana opposition party We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), has vowed to continue his political and legal fight despite facing an 11-count indictment filed by the United States government. The indictment, unsealed on October 2, 2025, accuses Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, of orchestrating a gold export fraud scheme, evading taxes and royalties, and bribing officials to facilitate the illegal shipment of gold.
The charges, which include conspiracy, mail and wire fraud, and money laundering, allege that Mohamed’s Enterprise, a gold export company, circumvented Guyana’s revenue system by reusing customs seals and export declarations. In response, Mohamed insisted he would continue his duties as opposition leader and challenge the charges with a legal team from Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and the UK. He also accused the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) of using political influence to target him.
Mohamed described the case as a political attack, claiming the PPP/C’s lobbying efforts in Washington aimed to discredit him and weaken his growing support. He asserted that, despite WIN's relatively short political history, the party’s success in securing 16 parliamentary seats has made it a significant threat to the government. Reaffirming his commitment to his supporters, Mohamed vowed not to be intimidated, declaring he would not be silenced in the face of political persecution.
