Hamzat tells grads Nigeria needs thinkers, not degree zombies

Lagos' deputy governor says passive degree holders won't fix Nigeria. Obafemi Hamzat declared the nation's future needs critical thinkers ready to confront challenges directly. He addressed graduates at a university convocation in Osogbo, represented by Commissioner Layode Olanrewaju. Hamzat argued that academic achievement alone is insufficient for a rapidly changing world, urging new graduates to become active solution builders.

He emphasized the need for compassion and wisdom alongside specialized knowledge. The deputy governor told graduands to apply their skills to real-world experiences and evolving responsibilities. A convocation lecture focused on building prosperity through leadership and economic empowerment. The guest lecturer, Kazeem Adeduntan, called for Islamic scholars to expand into technological and economic leadership roles.

Adeduntan described the global Muslim community as an untapped force. He urged expertise in emerging fields like Islamic digital ethics and venture finance. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ramota Karim, reaffirmed the university's commitment to academic excellence and character development. She noted significant investment in campus capital projects during the academic session.

Graduation statistics included over four hundred undergraduate students receiving degrees. This group contained numerous First Class and Second Class Upper honorees. The ceremony also recognized over eighty postgraduate students earning advanced degrees. One doctoral degree in Microbiology was awarded under the Department of Biological Sciences.
