Hansal Mehta admits greed killed his own film

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta reflected on Monday about his 1999 release Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar as the film reached its 25th anniversary. The director shared the movie poster on Instagram and acknowledged how creative compromises weakened Saurabh Shukla's original screenplay. Market pressures led the team to add six songs and soften the protagonist's character despite the script's darker themes about betrayal and human greed.

Mehta noted the project's failure pushed him toward financial ruin and alcohol dependency. The film's negatives have been destroyed through negligence or carelessness. The experience cost him friendships but provided valuable lessons he carries forward in his career. The director stated he has reconciled with those he previously blamed for the commercial failure and plans to detail this period in his future memoirs.
