Harare bans abandoned cars after children's bodies found

Harare authorities ordered the immediate removal of all abandoned vehicles from parking facilities, shopping areas, and streets after three children were discovered dead inside a derelict car at a guarded parking lot in Kuwadzana Extension. Acting town clerk Phakamile Moyo gave car park operators and vehicle owners seven days to clear broken-down automobiles from their premises, warning that the city would remove them at the owner's expense if they failed to comply.

The directive addresses safety concerns after the bodies of three missing minors were found decomposing in the trunk of a long-abandoned vehicle. Officials said derelict cars have become hazards for children and sites for criminal activity. The city plans to transport confiscated vehicles to junkyards for storage before disposal or auction. Moyo declared that storing non-functional vehicles at commercial parking facilities, shopping centers, public spaces, or residential streets violates city regulations.
