Harare Hubby Steals to Bury Secret Baby

A Harare man stole money from his wife and sold home appliances after his child from an affair died. Elliot Maruye took $210, the refrigerator, the television, and the solar battery to pay for the funeral costs. He admitted his actions at the Harare Civil Court, where his wife sought legal protection. Maruye said he acted out of desperation because he wanted a proper burial for his child.

His wife, Sirena Mutisi, noticed her things missing but thought they were being repaired. She learned the truth when she heard him talking about finding funeral money on the phone. Mutisi felt betrayed when she confronted him about using their resources for his child from another woman. She struggles to buy food because of his actions. Her husband became violent after losing his child.

The court granted Mutisi a protection order. Magistrate Meenal Narotam told Maruye to stop ruining his marriage. Maruye apologized and admitted he was wrong. He said he could not let his child be buried without dignity. The theft happened after the death of the child from his extramarital relationship.
