Harare play brings war over Nehanda's bones to Scotland

Zimbabwean theatrical production Song Unburied prepares for its international debut at Scotland's Edinburgh Festival next month. Daves Guzha directs this ritualistic drama written by Panashe Chigumadzi, which explores themes of artifact repatriation and cultural reclamation. The cast features Charmaine Mujeri, Dalma Chiwevera, Tinevimbo Chimbetete, and mbira musician Abel Mafuleni delivering what critics describe as powerhouse performances. Theatre in the Park will host encore presentations from July 17 through 19 before the company travels to Edinburgh. Local reviewers have praised the production's immersive design and thought-provoking narrative structure.

The narrative follows Rambisayi Mangosho, the British Museum's first black curator of Zimbabwean heritage, who experiences haunting dreams preventing her return home. Tsitsi, a war veteran working as museum caretaker, guides Rambi through a spiritual journey of remembrance and resistance. Both women discover their shared vaChihera totem while uncovering the unreturned remains of legendary anti-colonial figure Mbuya Nehanda. The discovery forces them to confront complex truths about proper ritual practices and potential consequences. Chigumadzi weaves together mythology, memory, and contemporary politics through this poetic yet political storytelling approach.

Award-winning author Panashe Chigumadzi brings extensive experience challenging colonial narratives and celebrating Black identity through her previous works Sweet Medicine and These Bones Will Rise Again. The production arrives amid ongoing advocacy for returning Zimbabwean artifacts, particularly Richard Mudariki's campaign for the Zimbabwean bird's return from South Africa. Song Unburied amplifies these cultural repatriation discussions through theatrical performance.
