Harare to Beitbridge highway enters final stretch with 540km done

Five contractors, hundreds of kilometers down, and the Harare–Beitbridge Highway is basically staring at the finish line.

The big picture, fast
  • Roughly 540 kilometers of the Harare–Beitbridge Highway are already open to traffic.
  • Only 43 kilometers are still left before the whole stretch is done.
  • At this stage, most drivers are already feeling the upgrade in real time.
Why this road matters politically
  • This highway rehab sits near the top of the legacy list for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
  • It runs alongside the overhaul of the Beitbridge Border Post.
  • The goal is simple: fewer bottlenecks, less chaos, smoother regional movement.
Who actually did the work
  • Five local firms were handed the job.
  • Tensor Systems
  • Masimba Holdings
  • Fossil Contracting
  • Exodus & Company
  • Bitumen World
What the project actually involves
  • This is not just a resurfacing job.
  • The scope covers dualisation, upgrades, and tolling.
  • Toll fees are meant to pay for the rehab and keep future maintenance alive.
How the kilometers break down
  • Bitumen World knocked out 128.8 kilometers.
  • Fossil Contracting delivered 122.6 kilometers.
  • Masimba Holdings handled 100 kilometers.
  • Exodus & Company finished 90.6 kilometers.
  • Tensor Systems completed 90 kilometers.
  • A 7.2-kilometer trial section also made the cut.
Where that leaves things
  • Add it all up, and 539.2 kilometers are already open.
  • Traffic is flowing on nearly the entire route.
  • What remains is a relatively short final push to close out one of Zimbabwe’s biggest road projects.
