A village headman was murdered in a family power grab over a chieftaincy title. Headman John Chimana Chaora, fifty-four, from Kazunga Village under Chief Chipuriro in Guruve, was strangled to death on Christmas Day in a plot allegedly orchestrated by a relative coveting his position. Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of five suspects: Kelvin Katuruza Chaora, twenty-six, a sixteen-year-old juvenile, Chemika Gwenzi, thirty-three, Bvumbe Mandeya, thirty-five, and Ranwes Chaora, fifty-eight. Investigators believe Ranwes Chaora, angered over the victim's selection for the chieftainship, planned the killing to mimic recent unrelated murders terrorizing the district.
The victim was last seen alive at Bowen Business Centre after attending a Christmas gathering with his son, Manyara Chaora. After his father failed to return home, a large search operation involving police and soldiers began. Initial suspicions pointed to known bandit Anymore Zvitsva, but the case broke when the teenage suspect was caught with the headman's phone. This led police to Kelvin Chaora, who had the victim's shoes. The suspects eventually confessed to strangling Headman Chaora and dumping his body near Ambush Dam, where it was found days later in severe decomposition. Police stated the killing was a deliberate attempt to exploit the fear from other local crimes.
