Health risk fears as fake mealie meal floods Harare market

Authorities launched enforcement operations against counterfeit merchandise across Zimbabwe's retail sector. Consumer Protection Commission inspectors worked alongside Trade Measures Department officials and police officers during Tuesday raids in central Harare. Multiple retail outlets contained fraudulent goods, particularly fake mealie meal products bearing unauthorized brand markings. Concerned citizens provided tips that triggered the investigation into these illegal commercial activities.

Officials discovered imitation Pearlenta packages with incorrect logos and packaging features that failed to match authentic product specifications. National Foods Limited quality supervisor Nyasha Mudita identified clear differences between genuine merchandise and the counterfeit items seized during operations. The fake products posed significant health risks to unsuspecting customers who might purchase these unauthorized goods.

Consumer Protection Commission representative Tom Muleya urged shoppers to examine product labels carefully before making purchases. Trade Measures inspector Tawedzerwa Muwani warned retailers about legal consequences for selling unauthorized merchandise. Police took custody of all confiscated items for detailed forensic analysis and potential criminal prosecution of those responsible for manufacturing or distributing these dangerous fake products.
