Hema Malini disliked the Dream Girl billing without her name

Hema Malini hated being called Dream Girl at first, and the reason is genuinely petty in the best way. On Indian Idol, she recalled how her debut Sapno Ka Saudagar plastered Mumbai with hoardings announcing the Dream Girl's arrival, erasing her name entirely. She was gutted, riding around the city with her mom, staring at posters pretending she didn't exist.

Her producer told her the title would stick forever, and dude wasn't wrong. The nickname only grew louder with every hit. Years later, her mother produced the 1977 film Dream Girl under Pramod Chakravorty's direction, with legendary cinematographer V.K. Murthy handling the camera. The iconic track Kisi Shayar Ki Ghazal took five or six days to shoot across multiple costumes.

And the funny part is the movie had zero connection to the Dream Girl label initially. The makers just needed a title, and since the story leaned on Hema's character, the name fit. Shreya Ghoshal pointed this out, and Hema smiled and agreed. The whole thing was a masterclass in how one random marketing call becomes your entire identity.
