HK Trade Boss Eyes Gulf Goldrush

Hong Kong's trade leader wants to bring Gulf countries together for business talks next year. Frederick Ma leads the Trade Development Council and took charge during June. He plans major conferences to connect Middle East nations with China and Southeast Asia. Trade between Hong Kong and these regions jumped over 30 percent recently. Ma believes the city can help companies from different areas work together.

President Trump's changing policies worry business leaders around the world. Investment growth slowed down because companies cannot predict what happens next. The trade council lowered Hong Kong's export growth forecast from four percent to three percent. Ma says unpredictable American decisions affect global business confidence. Hong Kong must adapt to these sudden policy changes.

The former treasury minister travels overseas next week to build stronger business relationships. He visited the Middle East back during 2006 as the first Hong Kong official to lead such missions. African countries with large populations attract his attention for future partnerships. The council studies emerging markets that offer good trading opportunities. Small businesses need help connecting with international supply chains.

Ma reviews the council's 51 overseas offices to use resources better. The government faces budget problems that require careful spending decisions. Mainland China offices stay open because they connect local companies with global markets. Hong Kong keeps its advantages through strong legal systems and financial stability. Recent stock market gains show the economy remains active despite global challenges.
