Idaho college quadruple murder plea deal averts execution

Bryan Kohberger changed his mind about fighting murder charges. The 30-year-old criminology student admitted he killed four college students back in 2022. He made a deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty. The judge asked him directly if he was guilty of the crimes. Kohberger answered yes without showing any emotion.

Four young people died at their house near the University of Idaho campus. Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen were all stabbed to death. Police found DNA evidence on a knife cover at the crime scene. Investigators arrested Kohberger at his family home weeks after the murders. He had been studying at Washington State University nearby.

The case shocked America because of how brutal the attacks were. Kohberger was working on his PhD in criminology when he committed the murders. Police never found a clear reason why he killed the students. They believe he did not know any of the victims personally. The judge will sentence him on July 23rd.

Victim families have different feelings about the plea deal. Kaylee's father feels disappointed and wanted more details about what happened. He said the state made a deal with the devil. Madison's father feels relieved the case is over. He did not want to go through a long trial process.

Kohberger will spend his entire life behind bars. Idaho still has the death penalty but rarely uses it. The judge received many messages from people trying to influence his decision. He ignored all the messages and told people to stop sending them.
