IEK Slams Ruto for Illegally Appointing Jumwa

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) wants Aisha Jumwa removed as chairperson of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB). IEK says President William Ruto's appointment of Jumwa on January 17 violates the KRB Act.

According to IEK president Eng Shammah Kiteme, the KRB Act requires the President to appoint a non-executive chairperson from nominees of five specific organizations. These organizations are the IEK, the Automobile Association of Kenya, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, and the Kenya Transport Association.

Kiteme stated that Jumwa does not represent any of these five organizations. He questioned whether her appointment followed the law.

The KRB oversees road conditions, sets construction standards, and ensures projects are technically sound. Kiteme believes an engineering professional with a civil, structural, or transport background would provide crucial expertise for the board's technical responsibilities.

Appointing a chairperson with hands-on technical experience would strengthen the board's ability to tackle engineering and infrastructure issues. It would also align with the KRB's legal framework.

Kiteme called for Jumwa's immediate revocation. He wants a qualified chairperson appointed in compliance with the law.
