IIT Kanpur has selected Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for its Distinguished Alumni Award 2025. The institute considers this recognition its highest honor for former students. The Board of Governors unanimously approved this decision after reviewing Kumar's career record. Kumar completed his civil engineering degree at the institution during the 1980s.
The award ceremony will occur on November 2, 2025, during the campus's 66th Foundation Day celebrations. Kumar and his family received invitations to attend the event personally. Prof. Amey Karkare will coordinate the ceremony as Dean of Resources and Alumni. Kumar assumed leadership of India's Election Commission in February 2024 as the 26th commissioner. The Kerala cadre IAS officer from the 1988 batch has served in various government positions throughout his career.
