Impersonators scamming as Speaker, IGP busted in Volta

The Ghana police just busted three people for pretending to be the country's top politicians online. The Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team arrested the group for impersonating the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno. The suspects are identified as Judith Soku, Gideon Awudi, and Edem Soku.

The crew was not just roleplaying. They are accused of using fake social media profiles of those officials to scam people. Their operations were based in the Volta Region, with arrests happening in Sogakope and Dabala after a longer investigation around Sogakope, Dzodze, and Penyi. Beyond the political impersonation, they allegedly ran various other fraud schemes. These included mobile money scams, credit card fraud, and fake sales of airtime and goods on social media.

All three are now in police custody, helping with the ongoing investigation. The police briefing stated the suspects had also faked being other important figures, not just Bagbin and the IGP. Their goal was to trick people into handing over money through their different fraudulent setups.
