India airlines limp, ICRA eyes ATF pain

India's domestic aviation sector demonstrated strength amid operational difficulties, with passenger numbers rising marginally in August. ICRA analysts project steady expansion between four and six percent for the upcoming fiscal year. Lower fuel expenses and robust pricing power enable carriers to navigate immediate hurdles effectively.

August witnessed 131.7 million domestic travelers compared to 131.3 million during the same period last year. The five-month period recorded 677.5 million passengers, representing modest annual growth. Previous fiscal year data revealed domestic traffic reached 165.4 million while international passengers totaled 33.9 million.

Engine malfunctions and supply shortages have sidelined numerous aircraft, forcing airlines to secure expensive temporary leases. Pilot and crew shortages compounded these problems, causing widespread flight disruptions. Despite these setbacks, strong passenger demand and equipment manufacturer compensation help offset financial pressures facing the industry.
