India and the EU call for plastic cleanup, startups rush to Ideathon

India and the European Union initiated a collaborative innovation challenge targeting marine plastic pollution solutions. The program seeks applications from entrepreneurs, scientists, and businesses across both regions to develop practical remedies for ocean waste. Dr. Parvinder Maini from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser emphasized the joint commitment to creating globally applicable yet locally effective approaches. Signe Ratso from the European Commission highlighted how this partnership strengthens bilateral cooperation on environmental sustainability.

The competition framework addresses marine plastic contamination that threatens aquatic ecosystems, public health, and coastal economic activities. Professor Hoysala Chanakya and John Hanus presented regional pollution assessments during the launch ceremony. Their analysis demonstrated existing challenges and current research efforts across Indian and European waters. Interested participants may submit proposals through October 2nd.
