India backs 110 telecom R&D projects as FRI tool fights financial fraud

Government officials confirmed that telecommunications authorities have sanctioned 110 research initiatives valued at Rs 304.70 crore through June 30. Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar announced these developments during parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday. The Telecom Technology Development Fund began operations in October 2022 to advance communication technology research. Academic institutions, startups, and manufacturing companies receive funding through this program. Project timelines span between one and five years.

The Telecommunications Department created the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator system to combat mobile-based financial crimes. This platform assigns risk ratings to phone numbers based on fraudulent activity patterns. Banks and payment companies access these assessments through the Digital Intelligence Platform. Reserve Bank advisories guide financial institutions on system integration procedures. Security measures have resulted in freezing over one million accounts and restricting another 305,000 accounts across 34 participating organizations.
