India logs 56 lakh foreign tourists in 2025 boom

Government data reveals India welcomed 5.6 million international visitors through August alongside 30.4 billion domestic travelers. Medical tourism accounted for 131,856 foreign arrivals by April, representing 4.1 percent of total international visits. Officials approved 40 sustainable tourism projects worth 329.6 billion rupees across 23 states during fiscal year 2024-25.

The tourism sector generated 1.57 trillion rupees for India's economy in 2023-24, representing 5.22 percent of gross domestic product. Employment figures show 36.9 million direct positions and 47.7 million indirect roles, totaling 13.34 percent of national employment. Foreign exchange earnings reached 515.3 billion rupees while outbound travel exceeded inbound visits at 8.44 million versus 1.65 million respectively by June 2025.
