India sees 84 percent drop in mother-to-child HIV transmission since 2010

Union Health Minister Anupriya Patel reported substantial progress against HIV transmission during parliamentary proceedings. Mother-to-child infection rates dropped 84 percent through government intervention programs. The decline reached 74.5 percent between 2010 and 2024, surpassing the global reduction of 56.5 percent during the same timeframe. National AIDS Control Organisation coordinates comprehensive awareness initiatives through multimedia campaigns and digital platforms. Community health workers deliver training programs at grassroots levels.

The government launched 1,619 targeted projects addressing high-risk populations across the nation. These interventions focus on female sex workers, men who have sex with men, drug users, transgender individuals, truck drivers, and migrants. Anti-discrimination campaigns combat stigma against people living with HIV through workplace and community outreach. Officials appointed ombudsmen in 34 states and union territories to handle discrimination complaints. These measures demonstrate governmental commitment to protecting HIV-positive individuals' rights and dignity.
