India slashes hydrogen costs, eyes $150 billion windfall

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced India has launched its hydrogen energy initiative with ambitious production goals. The country plans to generate 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Production costs have decreased from $3.50 per kilogram to $3 per kilogram, creating potential savings of $150 billion on energy imports. Public sector companies will develop 1 million metric tonnes of capacity by the target date.

India seeks to capture 10 percent of the worldwide hydrogen market under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration. Authorities have already allocated green hydrogen projects totaling 900 kilotonnes per annum to 19 companies. The nation ranks as the world's third-largest energy consumer and crude oil importer while operating as the fourth-largest refinery system globally.
