Inmate Sigmon Chooses Firing Squad Over Injection Pain

Brad Sigmon faces death by gunfire tomorrow evening in South Carolina. The prison plans to execute the 67-year-old man at six PM local time. No one has died by firing squad anywhere across America since 2008. South Carolina found Sigmon guilty back in 2001 for attacking David and Gladys Larke with a baseball bat until they died.

The murdered couple had a daughter who dated Sigmon previously. After killing her parents, Sigmon forced his ex-girlfriend into his car at gunpoint. She managed to run away later. Officials gave Sigmon three death method choices - he picked bullets over deadly drugs or electricity. He believed shooting might hurt less than the alternatives. Several botched needle executions plus medicine shortages pushed states toward considering firing squads again.

When execution day arrives, guards will secure Sigmon against a chair using straps. They attach a target directly over his heart area and place a hood across his head. Three staff members stand fifteen feet distant behind a curtain. Each person fires a rifle simultaneously at the heart marker. Since courts allowed executions again in 1976, only Utah has shot prisoners as punishment. Just three people nationwide have faced firing squads - every case happened in Utah.

Sigmon asked the Supreme Court for help one final time. He argued that South Carolina broke proper rules about injection methods. The justices denied his request. Many researchers believe bullets kill more reliably than other execution techniques. They claim shooting causes faster death with fewer complications. South Carolina turned to rifles because finding lethal drugs became nearly impossible. The state also questioned whether other methods seemed cruel. People attending include his attorney, relatives of the murdered victims, and journalists. The shooters remain anonymous forever because screens hide them completely during the process. This situation highlights ongoing debates regarding how America should handle capital punishment.
