Intel is seen as lacking for OpenAI's needs, partnership uncertain

Analysts suggest a comprehensive partnership between OpenAI and Intel appears unlikely due to Intel's current inability to meet the AI firm's high-performance computing requirements. While OpenAI has secured agreements with numerous hardware providers and cloud services, Intel's Gaudi-class AI accelerators are considered less competitive than offerings from rivals like NVIDIA and AMD. The company has also not yet demonstrated a mature, integrated software and hardware stack necessary for such a collaboration.

A potential limited-scale agreement could theoretically be motivated by political strategy, as it might help OpenAI secure favorable treatment under government initiatives like the CHIPS Act. However, this remains speculative. Intel's ongoing challenges in the AI segment, which have prompted its CEO to personally oversee the division, currently position it as an unsuitable partner for fulfilling OpenAI's advanced computational needs for artificial general intelligence research.
