Intel Nova Lake AX leak teases war with AMD Strix Halo over monster core chips

Intel develops enthusiast-grade AX processors to challenge AMD's Halo APUs with its forthcoming Nova Lake-AX product. The company previously abandoned Arrow Lake-based plans that would have combined 6+8 core designs with high-end Xe2 graphics and Adamantine cache technology. Reports from insider sources suggest Nova Lake will serve as the platform for Intel's enthusiast ambitions. The Nova Lake family launches next year across mobile and desktop segments, unlike the mobile-focused Panther Lake generation. This broader scope positions Nova Lake as an ideal candidate for high-performance applications.

Nova Lake-AX targets the enthusiast market with advanced Foveros packaging technology enabling sophisticated chip integration. Standard Nova Lake processors feature up to 52 cores with 16 P-cores using Coyote Cove architecture and 32 E-cores based on Arctic Wolf design, plus 4 low-power efficiency cores. The enthusiast variant likely maintains similar core configurations while adding specialized cache tiles for graphics support. Enhanced Xe3 Celestial graphics architecture powers the integrated GPU with potentially 20 to 24 cores. High thermal design power requirements make these processors suitable for AI workstations, mobile workstations, and gaming systems.

Industry analysts expect Nova Lake-AX availability around 2026 or 2027, following standard processor launches. AMD will likely counter with upgraded Halo APUs featuring Zen 6 cores and advanced graphics architectures by that timeframe.
