Inyathi villagers defy ban to protest Marconati court date

Cops in Matabeleland North just shut down a protest against a sketchy gold miner. Police refused to authorize a demonstration by Inyathi villagers planning to gather at the court appearance of businessman Francesco Marconati, who faces illegal gun charges. The villagers accuse Marconati and his Duration Gold Limited mine employees of terrorizing the community, citing a recent incident where a mine guard shot and killed a local man.

Authorities initially approved the protest but reversed the decision, with a district officer claiming the demonstration could harm Zimbabwe's image with foreign investors if videos spread online. The villagers, in a letter co-signed by a local Zanu PF coordinator, stated they are mourning and will attend the hearing wearing protest t-shirts, denouncing the killing. Some community members vow to proceed with the demonstration anyway, alleging police consistently protect Marconati while ignoring complaints against him.

Marconati, an Italian businessman with gold mines in the Bubi district, has a history of legal issues, including fraud convictions and threatening a former partner. He was arrested after the shooting at his mine, but was later released on bail by the Supreme Court. The villagers' frustration highlights a pattern of impunity, with past allegations that his workers performed court-ordered community service on his behalf.
