Tanga Port just docked its first-ever container ship straight from Iran, and regional officials are geeking out over what this means for local jobs and trade routes. The 13,000-ton vessel rolled up carrying 463 containers packed with industrial gear and tech products, split between Tanzania and neighboring countries like Malawi, Zambia, and Uganda. Regional Commissioner Batilda Burian said the eight-day shipping route opens doors for Tanga youth to tap into Iranian tech for spice processing, small-scale manufacturing, and pharma work.
Seven Seas Shipping Agency is running the operation and expects three to four monthly arrivals moving forward, with the next ships hitting the docks in early December. The port upgrades cost around 429 billion shillings, and officials are pushing for sister-city partnerships with Iran to speed up technology transfers and market access for young entrepreneurs in the region.
