Iranian warships gatecrash SA drills as defence chiefs defy Ramaphosa

Military brass appear to have blown off a direct order from the commander-in-chief. Iranian warships joined naval drills in Simon's Town despite President Cyril Ramaphosa's instructions to exclude them. The vessels IRIS Bushehr, IRIS Tunb, and IRIS Bayandor participated in BRICS exercises near Cape Town, with one docking in the harbor. This defiance sparked immediate backlash from opposition parties.

Defence Minister Angie Motshekga has launched an inquiry into the incident. The probe will examine why the South African National Defence Force allowed the participation despite clear directives. Democratic Alliance shadow defence minister Kobus Marais condemned the move as a disregard for presidential authority. ActionSA's Athol Trollip labeled the situation a national security risk.

The United States expressed strong disapproval of Iran's inclusion, citing geopolitical tensions. The event complicates South Africa's neutral foreign policy stance and relationships with Western allies. Opposition figures are demanding accountability and transparency from the defence force leadership. They call for parliamentary scrutiny of the chain of command failure.

The controversy raises concerns over military discipline and operational control within the state. It also impacts perceptions of South Africa's international partnerships and its standing within the BRICS coalition. The inquiry's findings may influence future protocol for multinational exercises.
