Iraq's al-Sudani squeezes Kurdistan for oil

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani announced Thursday that Baghdad secured a landmark oil export agreement with Kurdistan Region authorities. Federal officials will manage crude shipments from Kurdish fields through the Turkey pipeline system. The breakthrough follows extensive negotiations between Baghdad, Erbil, and eight international energy companies controlling most regional production. Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani convened his cabinet to examine export resumption terms.

March 2023 marked the suspension of Kurdish oil shipments after Paris arbitrators ruled Turkey needed Baghdad's approval for pipeline operations. The stoppage damaged revenues for both governments and weakened Iraq's global energy position. Industry experts expect the accord to strengthen Iraq's domestic oil sector while restoring international investor confidence. The deal represents a major achievement in Iraqi energy policy since 2003.
