Barzani, al-Hakim push oil law, election unity in Erbil

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met on Tuesday with Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the National Wisdom Movement, to discuss national issues and Erbil-Baghdad relations, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government. Both leaders stressed the need to resolve outstanding disputes between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government. They welcomed the recent tripartite agreement and called for it to serve as a foundation for passing a unified oil and gas law. The resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region was highlighted as a key step toward broader cooperation.

Prime Minister Barzani outlined the KRG’s reform efforts, including the Runaki program, improved electricity services, banking activation, and the MyAccount initiative. He expressed readiness to assist the federal government in strengthening the national power grid by sharing the Region’s energy and digital governance experience. The talks also addressed Iraq’s upcoming parliamentary elections, with both parties expressing hope for a peaceful and inclusive outcome. Iraqis will vote on Nov. 11 under a new single non-transferable vote system across 83 multi-member constituencies.
