Joe Walker Foundation organized a massive 21-kilometer safety march that grabbed attention across Kampala. The group wanted people to notice how many deaths happen because of motorcycle crashes. Hundreds of walkers joined the public event that kicked off at 8 a.m. from Sheraton Hotel. The route took everyone through busy neighborhoods like Nakawa, Ntinda, Kamwokya, and Nankulabye before returning to the starting point. Foundation members talked with motorcycle taxi drivers at their waiting spots during the entire journey.
Motorcycle taxis serve as the main transportation choice for most Kampala residents and millions of other Ugandans. These fast and reliable rides also provide jobs for hundreds of thousands of men across the country. Joseph Beyanga leads these safety campaigns and people know him as Joe Walker for his long walking missions. He completed a Kampala to Mbale march during 2023 and finished a 360-kilometer trek to Gulu earlier this year. His walks support the United Nations goal of cutting road deaths by half before 2030 arrives.
Multiple companies backed this weekend march with money and resources. Jubilee Allianz, Coca-Cola Beverages, Safe Boda, Sheraton Hotel Kampala, Nicole Foundation, Next Media Services, and Betika Uganda all helped make the event happen. These partners show their dedication to building safer communities through sports and transportation programs. Uganda Police numbers reveal that motorcycles cause nearly half of all road accidents. The foundation keeps pushing for better safety habits among riders and passengers.
