Judge eyes Salasya as MP preps peace PR for hate speech case

A court told a politician his apology tour needs actual work first. A Nairobi judge refused to rubber-stamp a deal between Mumias East MP Peter Salasya and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission. The court ruled the lawmaker must complete specific actions from their agreement before approving it.

Salasya faces hate speech charges for divisive comments posted on his social media account. Prosecutors said the remarks aimed to stir ethnic tension between communities. Both sides reached a conciliation agreement to settle the case outside of trial.

The judge noted Salasya had not yet done what he promised. The required actions include holding a public press conference and running a social media campaign promoting national unity. The court gave the MP a short period to show he followed through.

Only after fulfilling these terms will the judge consider adopting the agreement. This would allow prosecutors to withdraw the criminal case. Salasya thanked the prosecution and the NCIC for agreeing to the settlement.

He stated the resolution would conserve judicial resources. The MP also welcomed the chance to act as a peace ambassador. The case will return to court for a compliance check at a later point.
