Kananura gets joint custody despite morphine and abuse claims

A Kampala High Court judge awarded shared custody of three children to divorcing parents Andrew Kananura and Shiela Taratibu following contentious proceedings. Justice John Eudes Keitirima determined that both businessman Kananura and his estranged wife would maintain parental responsibilities despite their bitter separation. The couple wed at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero on December 30, 2014, before agreeing to dissolve their marriage due to admitted cruelty. Kananura agreed to continue funding educational and medical expenses for the children under a partial consent judgment. The parents could not reach agreement on custody arrangements, forcing judicial intervention.

Kananura testified that nine months had passed since he last saw his children after Taratibu relocated them to her sister's Munyonyo residence. He disputed allegations of substance abuse and domestic violence while requesting monthly access to the children. Taratibu presented opposing testimony about verbal abuse, emotional manipulation and unsafe living conditions at Kananura's home. She sought sole custody while demanding continued financial support from her former husband. The mother expressed concerns about potential international travel given Kananura's possession of the children's passports.

Justice Keitirima emphasized that both parents must participate in child-rearing decisions despite their personal conflicts. The court established that Taratibu would maintain weekday care while Kananura received weekend visitation rights. Neither parent may remove the children from Uganda without written permission from the other.
