Kansas Republicans split over redistricting push for 2024

Kansas Republicans failed to secure sufficient legislative support for a special session aimed at redrawing congressional districts despite pressure from President Trump and state party leadership. At least 10 House Republicans refused to sign a letter calling for the November 7 gathering, leaving intact the sole Democratic-leaning district currently held by Representative Sharice Davids. House Speaker Daniel Hawkins subsequently stripped six committee leaders of their positions following their refusal to support the redistricting initiative.

Resistance among Kansas lawmakers spans ideological lines, with both conservative and moderate Republicans expressing concerns about political backlash and ethical implications of mid-decade remapping. State Representative Clarke Sanders received a White House phone call after declining to support the effort, while Representative Brett Fairchild cited constitutional principles in his opposition.

The redistricting proposal could resurface when legislators convene for their regular January session, though supporters would still require two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override an expected veto from Democratic Governor Laura Kelly.
