Keep 808 notes the same length in FL Studio

FL Studio’s Resample mode changes a sample’s playback speed with pitch, so higher 808 notes become shorter and lower notes become longer. Nothing is wrong with the sample when this happens.

The behavior comes from ordinary resampling. Raising the note makes FL Studio play the waveform faster, which raises pitch and reaches the end sooner, while lowering the note slows playback and extends the tail. You can leave that behavior alone when the changing decay feels musical, but it becomes a nuisance when one bassline needs a consistent envelope across several pitches.

Stretch mode separates pitch from duration​

Open the 808 in the Sampler and look at the Time stretching section. With Resample selected, Piano Roll notes at different pitches also run at different speeds. Switching the mode to Stretch lets FL Studio change pitch while keeping the sample duration consistent across those notes.

The Time control matters just as much as the mode menu. If the Sampler has stopped responding normally to pitch or is already locked to project tempo, right-click Time and return it to none before diagnosing anything else. When Stretch is selected for the first time, FL Studio can lock the Time value to the current tempo, so check the displayed duration instead of assuming the mode change preserved the exact original length.

Do not confuse this with stretching an Audio Clip in the Playlist. The Sampler is responding to MIDI notes, while an Audio Clip has its own instance length and clip properties. Fixing the wrong object can leave you changing handles and knobs without touching the reason your C5 808 lasts longer than the same sample played several notes higher.

Pitch still needs a dependable reference before any comparison means much. Confirm accurate 808 root-note calibration first, then compare note lengths using pitches you actually intend to use in the bassline. Otherwise a setup problem and a duration problem get tangled together.

Equal length does not always mean equal sound​

Stretching solves the timing problem by doing more signal processing than simple resampling. Large pitch moves can expose graininess, softened attacks, low-end wobble, or a tail that feels less solid even when the waveform now lasts exactly as long. Short, clean 808s make those changes easy to hear.

Aggressive duration processing can also introduce time-stretching phase artifacts, which is why a technically constant note length can sound less focused than the untouched one-shot. Listen to the transient and the sustained low end separately instead of judging the fix only by what the Piano Roll looks like.

FL Studio gives you more than one stretching method, so the first setting is not automatically the best sounding one. A monophonic algorithm can suit a single-note bass source better than a general-purpose method, while realtime Stretch is useful when the Sampler must preserve duration as notes change. Test the lowest and highest notes in the actual phrase because wide intervals expose processing damage faster than repeatedly auditioning the root.

The PITCH control is another useful distinction. It can shift the sample while preserving its length, and FL Studio can move away from Resample automatically when that control is adjusted. This is handy for correcting the source itself, but it is not the same job as making every Piano Roll note share one duration.

A longer source can beat heavier stretching​

A short 808 cannot gain a clean, natural sustain merely because its MIDI note is longer. Once the recorded tail ends, FL Studio has to stretch, loop, or otherwise process existing audio if you want more duration. No Piano Roll rectangle can reveal bass that was never present in the file.

When Stretch starts sounding damaged, use a longer source sample and shorten it with an amplitude envelope. You keep more original waveform for low notes and avoid demanding huge duration changes from high ones. This often sounds steadier across a bassline than forcing a very short 808 to survive every octave.

Looping a stable section of the tail is another option when you need notes that can sustain for arbitrary lengths. DirectWave can repeat a sustained loop while a key is held, then continue beyond the loop when the note is released if the envelope is set appropriately. This keeps the original attack separate from the repeated body of the sound.

Loop boundaries need care. A jump between points with different amplitudes or waveform phases can click, pulse, or expose the loop immediately, so FL Studio recommends choosing compatible zero crossings and offers tools for tuning loop points. Crossfading can smooth a tail whose level or tone changes too much for a clean hard loop.
