Kenya Calls for Science-Driven Climate Adaptation at Summit in Nairobi

African leaders met at a major climate event hosted by Kenya. The Africa Climate Resilience Summit took place at the World Agroforestry Centre from June 30 to July 1, 2025. Government officials, scientists, community groups, religious organizations, and global institutions attended the meeting. The gathering focused on building stronger defenses against climate problems across the continent. Participants worked together to find better ways to protect African communities from weather disasters.

Wilber Ottichilo chairs Kenya's Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change Committee and serves as Vihiga County Governor. He warned that Africa faces serious danger from changing weather patterns. The United Nations Environment Programme predicts that half of Africa's people could struggle to find food by 2050. Climate damage threatens to make farming much harder across many regions. Leaders stressed the urgent need for science-based solutions and new funding methods.

The Vatican inspired this summit series as part of a worldwide climate protection campaign. Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco emphasized that climate problems affect all countries equally. Dr Eliane Ubalijoro leads the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry. She called for combining scientific research with local knowledge and practices. These partnerships can create stronger responses to environmental challenges.

Kenya announced its National Climate Change Action Plan and major renewable energy investments. The country aims to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. Archbishop Philip Anyolo from Nairobi's Catholic Archdiocese spoke about moral duties during the crisis. He described climate action as both a human and spiritual responsibility.
