Kenya pleads with Trump to not kill AGOA deal

Kenyan legislators have demanded immediate action from their government regarding negotiations with Washington for extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The trade program faces termination in September 2025, potentially causing widespread economic harm across the nation. Jane Kagiri from Laikipia County sponsored the motion that gained strong support from both political parties. Women represent three-quarters of program participants, with their earnings funding education and healthcare initiatives. Parliament requested a sixteen-year renewal period with alternative arrangements if negotiations fail.

Multiple representatives emphasized the program's significance during legislative discussions this week. George Murugara highlighted how termination would damage bilateral commerce throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Catherine Omanyo from Busia County stressed the regional impact on manufacturing sectors. Owen Baya praised the framework for creating employment through export processing zones. The 2000 legislation provides tariff-free market access for thousands of African products, receiving its last extension in 2015.
