Kenyan Health Workers Threaten Strike in 14 Days

Kenya health workers plan to launch a nationwide strike in two weeks unless officials meet their demands. Their colleagues from Universal Health Coverage have already stayed away from work for 95 days because of employment concerns. The Health Sector Caucus released a statement Wednesday asking for fair pay, permanent jobs, and payment for time served under contract. They call these basic rights that officials have ignored for long periods.

Police hurt several medical staff during peaceful protests in Nairobi on May 20. The health groups demand that the police chief apologize for these actions within seven days. They also want an independent investigation into officers who attacked demonstrators. Healthcare unions stressed they serve the public good rather than oppose the government.

Union leaders Peterson Wachira, George Gibore, Elias Mutuma, Odero Michael, Brown Ashira, Wycliffe Ogenya, and Pius Nyakundi signed the joint statement. These representatives ordered all member organizations to prepare for collective action if talks fail. The groups insist the Ministry of Health must meet with them to create a plan for absorbing contract workers into permanent positions starting July 1. They promise decisive steps if officials fail to address these concerns.
