Kenya's government approved major road improvements for Nairobi's busy Northern Bypass. The cabinet decided to expand the 20.2-kilometer stretch from one lane to two lanes each direction. Officials want to reduce traffic jams and handle more vehicles on the road. The project will add eight new interchanges and bridges for better traffic flow. Workers will also build walkways and bike paths for people without cars.
The Northern Bypass connects Ruaka and Ruiru areas around the capital city. Heavy traffic during rush hours creates delays and higher costs for travelers. The road remains the only single-lane bypass around Nairobi. Cabinet members said the upgrade will help people reach business areas and industrial zones faster. Better roads should also improve safety for all drivers.
Government leaders also approved plans for a new railway station downtown. The Central Station project aims to reduce crowding and bring new life to the business district. Engineers expect 400,000 people will use the station daily by 2030. That number could reach 600,000 passengers by 2045 as the city grows larger.
The new station will feature nine platforms and better bridges for passenger access. Designers planned the facility to move 30,000 people per hour during busy times. The project should create jobs and attract private companies to invest money. Officials believe the modern transportation hub will become the main transfer point for travelers across Nairobi.
