Kerala and Tamil Nadu emerge as major drug transit hubs as cartels shift routes

Drug trafficking patterns have shifted dramatically across India as enforcement agencies discover new smuggling networks. Kerala and Tamil Nadu have emerged as primary transit hubs for international narcotics operations. The extensive coastlines and busy airports provide ideal entry points for criminal organizations. Traditional routes through Afghanistan and Pakistan have given way to maritime smuggling from Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Cartels from the Golden Triangle and Golden Crescent regions utilize these southern states for distribution networks.

Sophisticated smuggling techniques involve concealing drugs within fruit juice containers and chocolate boxes to avoid detection. Nigerian operatives coordinate with local dealers to establish distribution chains throughout multiple states. Recent seizures demonstrate the massive scale of these operations, with authorities recovering thousands of kilograms worth billions of rupees. A fishing vessel intercepted near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands contained methamphetamine valued at 36,000 crore rupees. International cartels exploit legal loopholes by importing smaller quantities to reduce penalties and secure easier bail arrangements.
