Kerala leaders unite to condemn National Award for Sudipto Sen's The Kerala Story

Kerala political leaders united against the 71st National Film Awards decision to honor Sudipto Sen as best director for The Kerala Story. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the recognition while congratulating other Malayalam film industry winners. Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan joined Vijayan in rejecting the jury's choice. Both politicians characterized the award as politically motivated rather than merit-based. They argued the film promotes divisive messaging that contradicts democratic principles.

Vijayan described The Kerala Story as defamatory content that spreads falsehoods about the state. He claimed the recognition advances Sangh Parivar political objectives through cinema. Satheesan accused award organizers of weaponizing Indian film industry for partisan purposes. The opposition leader specifically mentioned targeting of Christian communities as evidence of broader political interference. Both leaders called for public resistance against what they termed institutional bias.

The controversial film depicts Kerala women being forced into Islamic conversion and terrorist recruitment. Producers marketed the movie as factual documentation of widespread religious conversion schemes. The narrative claims thousands of Hindu women from Kerala joined Islamic State after forced conversions.
