Khosrowshahi concedes Uber can't win, must partner with Tesla

Dara Khosrowshahi expects Tesla and Uber will share the autonomous vehicle market rather than compete for total dominance. The Uber chief executive argues the robotaxi industry offers sufficient opportunities for multiple companies to succeed simultaneously. His company previously divested its self-driving division to Aurora during 2020 while retaining an ownership stake. Uber has established partnerships with Motional for electric robotaxis and recently agreed to work with Nuro and Lucid Group. These collaborations allow various autonomous technologies to operate through Uber's transportation network.

Tesla recently began operating robotaxi services in Austin with human safety operators monitoring each vehicle. The electric vehicle manufacturer also started supervised ride-sharing programs in California's Bay Area region. Current rideshare markets generate approximately 58 billion dollars annually across the United States. Goldman Sachs analysts project the sector will expand to 336 billion dollars by 2030. Robotaxis may capture roughly 7 billion dollars of that projected market according to financial forecasts.
