TMR International Hospital achieved a medical breakthrough by performing Uganda's first closed-heart surgery at their Kira facility. The procedure successfully treated a nine-month-old patient with Patent Ductus Arteriosus, a birth defect where blood vessels fail to close properly after delivery. This condition forces abnormal circulation patterns that can damage both cardiac and pulmonary systems without intervention. The surgical team provided this life-saving treatment without charge to the infant's family. Dr. Muhoozi Rwakaryebe directed the cardiovascular procedure while Dr. Cornelius Ssendagire managed anesthesia services.
The collaboration between TMR Foundation and Upasuaji International enabled this cost-free medical intervention for financially struggling parents. Monica Karungi expressed relief that her child received expert care despite their economic circumstances. Lynsay Balumuka from Upasuaji International described the achievement as advancing pediatric cardiac access across East Africa. Dr. Daniel Talemwa emphasized that TMR aims to support existing cardiac programs at Uganda Heart Institute by reducing patient waiting times. The hospital plans to establish routine pediatric heart surgery capabilities through continued partnerships.
