Kolkata knee-deep, Firhad Hakim bets on KMC pumps pre-Puja

Kolkata authorities struggle to restore normal conditions after unprecedented rainfall killed ten residents and left numerous neighborhoods submerged. Record precipitation exceeded 300 millimeters during Tuesday's overnight downpour, which lasted from midnight until evening. Municipal workers deployed additional drainage pumps across the metropolitan area to combat persistent flooding. Mayor Firhad Hakim predicted a fourteen-hour recovery period, yet waterlogged streets continue hampering daily activities. Transportation networks have resumed operations on major railway lines and metro systems.

Ballygunge Outpost remains submerged in knee-deep water, while multiple districts continue to face ongoing drainage challenges. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation reports significant improvement along primary thoroughfares but acknowledges continued problems in residential lanes. College Street, Thanthania, Raja Rammohan Sarani, and numerous other locations continue to experience standing water accumulation. Officials express concern about clearing flood conditions before Durga Puja celebrations commence. Weather forecasters warn that additional heavy precipitation could worsen current drainage efforts throughout the affected metropolitan region.
