Kroger to close around 60 stores over the next 18 months

Kroger plans to shut down about 60 stores across the country during the next year and a half. The grocery giant announced this decision when sharing its first quarter earnings on Friday. Company leaders stressed these closures were planned ahead of time and not sudden surprises like other retailers have done recently.

The supermarket chain promises to help workers from closing locations find new jobs at different stores. Employees can transfer to other Kroger locations if they can handle the travel distance to their new workplace. The company wants to use money saved from closures to improve shopping experiences for customers.

CEO Ron Sargent believes focusing on core business areas will help Kroger grow stronger. He thinks the strategy will create value for shoppers and bring good returns for people who invest in the company. CFO David Kennerley said building up store brands and online shopping puts Kroger in a good position.

Kroger runs more than 2,700 stores nationwide and ranks among America's biggest grocery chains. The company has not revealed which specific locations will close or explained the reasons behind each decision. All affected stores will finish operations before December 2026 ends.
