KwaZulu-Natal's pregnancy plague mocks Ntuli's plan

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli launched a five-year plan on Tuesday to reduce child and teenage pregnancies, which resulted in 26,515 cases from April to December 2024. The strategy targets girls aged 10 to 19 after health data showed 1,254 pregnancies among children 14 and younger. Officials will coordinate health services, education programs, and community outreach efforts to address the factors that drive early motherhood.

The province connects pregnancy prevention with HIV control as young mothers face elevated infection risks. Ntuli stated at Ugu Sport and Leisure Centre that unaddressed pregnancies perpetuate poverty cycles across generations. Authorities aim for a 20 percent reduction through expanded clinic access, school awareness campaigns, and family support systems through 2029.
