Lagos Assembly Orders Audit of Ride-Hailing Firms Over Driver Grievances

Lagos lawmakers told major ride companies to explain their business practices after drivers complained about unfair treatment. The state assembly held hearings about Uber, Bolt, InDrive, Rida and LagRide following a petition from driver unions. Representatives want these companies to show how they pay drivers and take their cuts from fares.

Driver union leader Azeez Jaiyesimi said companies shut down driver accounts without clear reasons. He called the practices digital colonialism that hurts workers who depend on app-based jobs for income. The union wants lower fees, better health coverage and safety protections for drivers.

Assembly members demanded that ride companies submit their rules and policies for review. Lawmakers want to change laws that govern app-based transport services across Lagos State. The hearing revealed problems like high commission rates and poor safety measures for drivers.

Union officials thanked the Nigeria Labour Congress for supporting their cause during the assembly session. The drivers group plans to keep fighting until companies treat workers with respect and fairness. Assembly leaders will announce when the next hearing takes place.

The petition highlighted how companies remove drivers from platforms without transparency. Workers face dangers on the road but lack proper insurance or compensation when accidents happen. Lagos officials want these issues fixed before allowing companies to continue operations.
