Lagos lawmaker tackles insane rent hikes

Lagos lawmaker Sa'ad Olumoh slammed landlords for hiking rents across the state. He said these increases have left more people homeless throughout Lagos. The Ajeromi Ifelodun representative raised this as urgent during Tuesday's Assembly meeting.

Olumoh pointed to Section 37 of the 2015 Tenancy Law, which bans unreasonable rent increases. The law protects tenants through rules about payments, notice periods for ending agreements, and dispute handling. It limits advance rent payments and prevents landlords from using unauthorized methods to force tenants out.

Surulere representative Desmond Elliot supported the motion. He noted that infrastructure improvements meant to help residents have instead caused housing costs to rise sharply. Ikorodu lawmaker Aro Moshood added that many property owners raise prices without thinking about tenant incomes.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa called housing costs a sensitive issue needing careful review. He ordered the Housing Committee to meet with everyone involved. The committee will bring together officials, real estate agents, and investors. Obasa emphasized they must consider building material costs alongside rent problems.
